Jai Sri Ram! Hanuman is an idiot. He never deserved all those praise that is been showered upon him. He is the son of Anjana, born out of the blessings of Lord Vayu; hence called Anjaneya. Ever since his childhood, his stupidity manifested without fail; effectively counterbalanced by the merits and virtue of eminent people.
The first instance of his stupidity was in his cradle hood days. Perceiving the rising Sun to be a fruit of some sort, he leaped mid air to gobble it up. Vayu, the celestial father of Anjaneya, understood the danger that the kid has put himself into; encapsulated him with a whiff of cool air. Indra, the lord of the Devas, realising the foolishness of Anjaneyan's act, in an effort to save the world from perishing in darkness; and the kid from getting scorched, struck him lightly with his thunderbolt. The kid fainted and his jaw broken; hence the name Hanuman.
Vayu, though understood the good intentions of Indra, could not suppress his love of the child; hence curtailed himself completely, choking every living creature in the world. The life on earth - the karma bhoomi got strangled. Everyone including Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu tried to pacify Vayu in an effort to save the world. They granted umpteen number of boons to the child, to an extent that even the Brahmastra shall not harm but just curtail his motility for a few hours. Generally, a person receives boon from God upon rigorous penance and/or eligibility. In Hanuman's case, he secured every possible boon not out of his deserving stature but due to his father's influence - Recommendation!
When a person is bestowed with abilities and powers that cannot be harnessed properly, one loses stability of mind; only to become a prey to his valour. Such is the case of Hanuman. With so much power that sans the requisite maturity, coupled with the innate qualities of a monkey; Hanuman began playing pranks on everyone, disturbing their moral activities and peace. Troubled immensely by Hanuman, the disgusted sages decided to curse him off all his powers. However, as they knew the role that Hanuman has been destined to execute in the life of SriRam, hence the inevitability of his valour; cursed him that he would not realise his powers till someone reminded him. It was the grace of SriRam that Hanuman did not lose his powers due to his immature acts rather just got disconnected from them.
When the genuine need arose for Hanuman to serve SriRam with his abilities, Jambhavan reminded Hanuman of all the boons that he received earlier. However, his intellectual and psychological stupidity remained the same. It was only after reaching Srilanka that Hanuman realised that he did not request and know from his Lord SriRam the appearance of Devi Seetha. Hence he sat in Srilanka perplexed as how to identify his mother - Devi Seetha.
Seetha ever united with SriRam in mind and soul, presented her identity to Hanuman in an appropriate manner by enacting to commit suicide! Hanuman, when faced the demons of King Ravana's army; was hit by Brahmastra, captured by Indrajeet to be prosecuted. Punished by the cabinet of King Ravana, the tail of Hanuman was set on fire. Hanuman once again with his monkey pranks, triggered by the raging fire on his tail, eventually set fire to the entire island forgetting that his mother Seetha is still in Srilanka. It was actually Devi Seetha's merits and prayers that saved her as well as Hanuman from the fire!
Even during warfare, when Lakshmana fainted, hit by the Nagastra of Indrajeet, Hanuman was summoned to bring life saving Sanjeevani herbs from Himalayas. Hanuman, who had the physical strength, that too obtained as boon from the Devas earlier, reached Himalayas but was unable to identify the herbs properly. Hence, he brought with him the entire mountain down south - to Srilanka. This resulted in double work, as he had to go all the way again to Himalayas, to replace the mountain in its original location and return back to Srilanka before dawn for the next day's warfare!
Post war and victory; Hanuman became so very self centered that the victory of SriRam would not have been possible if it were not for his service and assistance. Lord SriRam, who is ever untouched and forever free from evil; chanting whose name one would be cleansed off every sin; understood the culmination of ego in Hanuman's mind. He informed Hanuman his intention to supplicate Lord Shiva to cleanse off the sins that got accumulated by killing Ravana - a Valorous one, a King and a Brahmin all in one - 'Veera Haththi Dosha', 'Raja Haththi Dosha' and 'Brahma Haththi Dosha' respectively. SriRam also summoned Hanuman to request a Siva lingam from Lord Shiva himself and bring it to Rameshwaram within a stipulated time.
Reaching Himalayas once again, Hanuman in all his efforts, was unable to find Lord Shiva within the time stipulated by Lord SriRam. However, Lord Shiva in order to fulfill the command of SriRam appeared before Hanuman and gave him the Siva lingam. In the mean time; in Rameshwaram, Devi Seetha made a Siva lingam out of sand and prayers were offered by SriRam; even before Hanuman arrived. Hence, Hanuman was deprived of the opportunity to attend and witness the rare event - one form of the same divinity worshipping its other form.
The ego of Hanuman filled him with rage on the futility of his efforts, and supplicated to SriRam his mental agony. Lord SriRam, in a composed manner informed Hanuman to remove the Siva lingam made of sand by Devi Seetha and replace it with the one that he had brought! Hanuman, filled with self-esteem, applied all his might to remove and destroy the Siva lingam made by Devi Seetha. The result, he lost large portion of his vital organ of being a monkey - his tail!
Hanuman though revered to be a celibate - a Brahmachari; during his journey to Srilanka in search of Devi Seetha, while crossing the ocean impregnated a lady with his sweat; even without his knowledge! Such being his qualities; anyone - everyone would be astonished at the respect and honour that is showered upon Hanuman.
A careful analysis of Hanuman's life events would throw light on a very thought illuminating aspect - Hanuman's blind love to his Guru - Lord SriRam. After returning to Ayodhya, Hanuman witnessed Devi Seetha adorning her forehead with the holy saffron powder. When enquired the reason, he was informed that it indicates prayer for the long life of SriRam. Immediately Hanuman, as if a remarkable manifestation of his foolishness, smeared himself all over the holy saffron powder without realising that it is meant for married women. Such is the blind faith and love of Hanuman towards his Guru SriRam; hence appreciated for all those qualities that he actually never possessed!
Similarly, though we all stand today, as the broken tailed Hanuman of Rameshwaram, due to positive multiples of negative qualities; let us surrender completely at the lotus feet of our Guru that we may be cleansed off all sin and karma; to remain in eternal peace and bliss. Sadgurudeva Saranam.

Hinduism postulates that God is formless as referred by Adwaitham, and the umpteen number of forms referred by Dwaitham ultimately rests on the former. Lord Shiva is the master of the universe. Parvathi is Shiva's consort. The alternate form is Lord Vishnu. Mahalakshmi is Vishnu's consort. Both Shiva and Vishnu are very unique in every aspect and quite opposite to the other when considered in the materialistic plane of view.
In an effort to bring more clarity to our statement, let us imagine auctioning the properties of both Shiva and Vishnu. The following are the properties of Shiva - skull, bone, snakes, skin of tiger, ash from burnt corpse, residence happens to be graveyard, if dug inside his body - poison! Would any of us be interested in purchasing his properties? Even so, would it be possible to assess the price of his properties? Absolutely not.
In the case of Vishnu - dress made of pure silk, scented flowers and garlands, panchajanyam - the conch, sudarshanam - the discus, residence happens to be vaikuntham with ocean of milk and nectar; surpassing all, Mahalakshmi - the ultimate goddess of wealth and prosperity, in his bosom! Would any of us be able to afford his properties? Certainly not.
Even though Shiva and Vishnu represent the same divinity, they are two unique and opposite poles in the materialistic view point. Both their properties - priceless in their own unique manner. Parvathi, Shiva's consort; failed to perceive the divinity, and understand profound truth behind the uniqueness of Shiva. She, hence compared her situation with Vishnu's consort, Mahalakshmi. The act of comparing oneself with another is a symptom of lost divinity.
Self-pity and jealousy filled Parvathi to an extent that she could no longer remain silent. She fully well knew the detached state of Shiva's mind and understood that she cannot transform HIM. Still, propelled by her agony and desire, she praised Shiva being the master of the universe and at the same time requested him to build her a beautiful house similar to that of Mahalakshmi, Vishnu's consort.
Shiva, smiled inside and told Parvathi that it is her fate to bear the rain and chill weather of the Himalayas, and she is not destined to possess a house of her own. Parvathi, encapsulated in Maya, chided Shiva that in spite of his omnipotence, such words from him were mere indication of his lack of interest and love towards her. Shiva, unable to pacify his wife, like most of us; chose an island surrounded by the sea, similar to Vishnu's residence; and built a beautiful palace, and towns for Parvathi. As stipulated in the scriptures, Shiva and Parvathi performed the house warming ceremony. King Ravana too was present in the function!
It is a custom to satisfy the guests with their object of desire without fail. Ravana, who was the last person to be gratified, when the opportunity arose requested Shiva, the ownership of the newly constructed palace and towns. Shiva and Parvathi now had no other option than to surrender their new possession to Ravana; and hence returned to Himalayas. It was when, Shiva reminded Parvathi that it was her fate not to possess a house of her own.
However, Parvathi was so very attached to the splendid palace built by her husband Shiva, that she kept thinking of it all the time. This eventually made her take birth as Seetha at King Janaka's house. Our thoughts and desire is the substratum of our birth. Lord Shiva incarnated as SriRam in Ayodhya. Post marriage, Mother Kaikeyi, who was so long very fond of SriRam, ordered him to leave the house and head to hermitage. The fate of Parvathi, incarnated as Seetha is the reason!
In spite of all this turmoil, Seetha failed to realise the truth; along with SriRam started heading south towards the island where her husband had built a palace exclusively for her, once upon a time. She was so very attached to the beauty of her house that compelled her to gain possession of every thing of beauty and elegance - even the illusive golden deer! Her passion on the palace was so great that it also exceeded her love towards her husband. It was this passion that pulled Ravana to her, and her depreciating love towards her husband made her lose him, by way of Ravana kidnapping her to Srilanka - her house!
Seetha, separated from her husband sat in loneliness and isolation in Srilanka. Without her Lord - SriRam, she found herself unable to cherish the pleasures of the magnificent palace and royalty, that once belonged to her. The pain of separation from her beloved made her realise that it was only because of her attachment to materialistic pleasures that she had to lose the warmth, comfort, blessings and love of her beloved.
When the understanding of truth dawn upon her, Maya disappeared and Seetha realised the ultimate truth. Her realisation brought SriRam successfully to Srilanka and she united with him in peace.
It was Parvathi's destiny - never to own a house; that she had to leave her house built by Lord Shiva. Incarnated as Seetha, her destiny drove her out of her house in Ayodhya to hermitage. It was Seetha's passion to her house in Srilanka which exceeded her love of SriRam that separated her from her husband by way of Ravana kidnapping her. She, in spite of reaching her house in Srilanka was devoid of happiness due to separation from her Lord SriRam.
Even after returning to Ayodhya, She was once again made to leave her house due to the vile comments of a dhobi aka laundryman. However, this time, that she learnt her lesson, she remained in peace at the ashram of Sage Valmiki. Begetting Lava and Kusha, sons of her husband SriRam, in her duty to continue the family race; she refused to adorn and grace the palace of Ayodhya, even upon invitation.
When we compare, we lose our divinity. Desire is the root cause of all sorrow. It is our attachment to materialistic luxury that separates us from our Lord. Fate reigns. There is absolutely no free will. Destiny is certain. When Lord Shiva incarnated as SriRam, Parvathi as Seetha; Nandhi - the bull incarnated as Hanuman. It is the reason for Hanuman to be so very devoted to SriRam. This happens to be the story of AathmaRam. Jai Sri Ram.

Adwaitham

Adwaitham

Since time immemorial, the doctrine of Adwaitham has been amidst us. The essence of Adwaitham is non-duality. It was Sri Adisankara who gave a profound impetus to this philosophy. He was successful in his mission to eradicate a host of other doctrines unrelated to and opposing the vedic culture. Adwaitham grants space to two more doctrines that are equally accepted and followed. They are Dwaitham and Vishistadwaitham. Dwaitham postulates duality - the distinct nature of the Paramaathma and Jivaathma. Vishistadwaitham postulates a scenario, wherein though Paramaathma and Jivaathma are existent, the Paramaathma resides as an inherent force of Jivaathma, without which the Jivaathma is rendered useless.
It is interesting to observe that Adwaitham acknowledges doctrines that is found to be totally opposing on the face of it. While Adwaitham indicates non-duality, Dwaitham and Vishistadwaitham indicates duality, in varying degrees. The fact is Adwaitham acknowledges the other doctrines, gives them their due space and recognition., and eventually surpass them. If we were to arrange these three doctrines in an order of application and practice, It would be Dwaitham, followed by Vishistadwaitham and finally Adwaitham. It is quite evident that our real time worldly experience indicates the existence of multiple subjects, and a definitive law that applies to their functioning.
One has to accept without variance that in the material plane of activity, the doctrine of Dwaitham is explicitly evident than the other. This makes us wonder if the remarkable philosophy propounded by an eminent person Sri Adisankara, remains just a philosophy or if at all we humans would be able to achieve any real time benefit out of it. The fact is the sole purpose of every human effort can be achieved in totality only through Adwaitham. The other philosophies Dwaitham and Vishistadwaitham are actually stepping stones to the ultimate truth.
Consciously or unconsciously, the efforts of every person is focused on achieving peace and happiness. The common man's incessant pursuit of happiness and the most unfortunate reality that there is no single person who is always happy and ever in peace is an indication of the futility of efforts or a misplaced focus. In spite of all this, India has always been identified and recognised as home to eminent people who have understood and put to practice the art of being forever happy and in peace. It hence can be inferred that two categories of people exist - the one who is in persistent search of happiness; and the other who is ever in bliss.
Happiness is a derivative of materialisation of desires. In the event of non-materialisation of desires, and upon identifying the cause; the reaction shall be anger if we are more powerful than the cause or sorrow if the cause is more powerful than us. It hence can be inferred that desire is the prime propellant of every human activity. Desire is the personification of our attachment to the results of our and other's actions. We remain attached to the results of actions due to our foolish belief that eternal happiness can be gained from external source. The substratum for all this turmoil on the surface is the belief that we are the performer.
One common ideology of every eminent person who is ever in bliss is humility and absence of the thought of performance. The question of them being incorrect does not arise as they have achieved something that we are yet to - Bliss. Let us try analysing their ideology using Newton's third law of motion. Anyone would accept without variance that every animate and inanimate entity in this universe is ever in motion. The law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If that be the case, a person's tomorrow is dependent on today's events. Then, his today's life is dependent on yesterday's events; and that depends on the day before yesterday's events. This is a chain reaction which logically traces an initial source. Hence free will is absent or negated. The postulate is a predetermined chain of events not controlled by common man as he himself is a part of; and hence victim of the chain reaction.
The moment we accept that everything in this universe is predetermined, desire loses ground. A desire free mind matures to selflessness and gains stability even during times of psychological turbulence and havoc. The focus hence gets shifted from the competitor to the situation. The scenario till here is the perception of multiple subjects; and a definitive law that reigns; hence Dwaitham. The moment individual effort is nullified in essence and every activity is traced to a source point, the philosophy Dwaitham matures to Vishistadwaitham.
Every person undergoes three states of existence in the material plane - the state of wake, sleep and dream. A person needs to be awake and alert to perform actions that forms a logical part of the incessant chain reaction discussed and acknowledged earlier. Sleep is the physiological need of the body, a condition that is quite opposite to the waking state of the person. One needs to be awake to perform, and sleep to rejuvenate. Shouldn't these two states suffice for the human being? When our rational minds analyse the need to dream or the existence of the state of dream, it paves way for Vishistadwaitham mature to Adwaitham.
As in the state of Dwaitham and Vishistadwaitham, we perceive multiple subjects in our dream too. We pass through umpteen number of emotional states while dreaming. However, the end of sleep characterised by our waking up provides us knowledge of the dream we just encountered; and the realisation that the characters we stumbled upon in the dream state are illusionary. What remains is just the singular person who visualised the dream.
Dwaitham is a state when our minds perceive multiple subjects and a definitive law. When we lose our individual ego, we mature to the state of Vishistadwaitham; however our perception of multiple subjects remain intact, except for the understanding that they are puppets in the dominance of the supreme self. When we are able to unite with the source point effectively, everything except I - the subject; becomes just an illusion - Adwaitham. In the state of Adwaitham the mind dissolves and disappears due to the lack of any object to be perceived. The resultant is eternal peace. The simplest way to dissolve the mind is to surrender it to a Guru.

Essence of Spirituality

Essence of Spirituality

I am a common man. I am basically a good human being. I believe in a super power that is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. I call it GOD. I believe and love that GOD in the form of Lord Ganesha. I begin going to temples and earnestly pray to Lord Ganesha. My prayers mature to an extent that, I bring home an idol/ a portrait of my Lord Ganesha and start worshipping it. I perceive the idol as the living form of my Lord Ganesha.
I spend hours at a stretch thinking of the qualities of my Lord Ganesha. My attitude towards my fellowmen takes a change as my prayers mature. I start regarding every person with respect and love. I am so very completely filled with the thoughts of my Lord Ganesha that I lose myself to HIM. I regard Lord Ganesha as the performer through me. I begin to lose my ego to Lord Ganesha.
It is when, I hear about a swamiji. He has a huge following of disciples. Whatever he says comes true - is what I hear. He too is seen worshipping Lord Ganesha. I go to him and find him to be a person revered by many. I begin visiting him often and start spending many hours with him. I am completely engrossed at the magnitude of the worship accorded to my Lord Ganesha at his place - the ashram.
I begin to follow his advice; most of which are as laid in the scriptures and holy books. Years roll on and my faith in him strengthens. I see him as an embodiment of my favourite Lord Ganesha. I believe that Lord Ganesha, pleased with my prayers so long, has taken this human form to bless me and interact with me.
As my faith in him strengthens beyond any fathoming limits, I get to hear about the vile activities of my revered swamiji. The media and reporters flood my space with news of negative and despicable acts of my swamiji, whom I regard as an embodiment of Lord Ganesha. I get hurt beyond limits. When I realise that the news of the wicked and disgraceful acts of my swamiji were all factual, I get totally shattered.
I lose my ability to face the people of my kith and kin due to the shame arising out of the blind faith that I had kept on this swamiji, and the pride in the belief of having received the blessings of my Lord Ganesha in this human form. My kith and kin laugh at me as the swamiji whom I so long revered is a fake. I begin to face intense turmoil in my mind as my faith in him was true and sincere.
The intense turmoil in my mind, initiates a process of introspection in me. I start chewing my days spent with him and the reasons thereof. This throws light on one crucial aspect. GOD is true, no debate on this. I worshipped GOD in the form of Lord Ganesha, with an idol representing him. Till here it is just my faith and the supreme being alone. If it is true that I had totally surrendered to Lord Ganesha, then it is the Lord Ganesha who is the prime reason  for me to regard this swamiji as an embodiment of my Lord.
So long, so good; but now it has been proved that the person whom I revered as my Lord is a cheat. Tracing back logically, It is Lord Ganesha - the supreme being who made this person intersect in my life. The supreme being can never be wrong. My faith and surrender to my Lord is definitely true and sincere without any show-off. In such a case, when I have the protective cover of my Lord, the present turn of events that showcase negativity is a test in disguise of my faith in my Lord Ganesha.
The moment I perceive the negativity of events that has surrounded me as a test of my faith and belief, it becomes a magical moment wherein I start emanating positive energy from within myself. The scenario is such that, I am presented with a choice - My beloved Ganesha who is wrong; and my perception of truth. I can never hold anyone wrong, if I cannot perceive truth. Hence the choice before me is valid. Now, I can either subdue to my feelings - my love of the form Ganesha or uphold the truth irrespective of my feelings.
If it is a fact that I am basically a good human being; then it is imperative that I uphold moral values, truth and justice even at the cost of my beloved form - Lord Ganesha aka my swamiji. This is precisely the test of time, when a person exhibits the inner strength by transcending various forms of GOD with the ability to perceive truth and justice at the substratum. Every form of GOD has to be an embodiment of truth and justice to be revered.
An instance of such an event is evident in the life of poet Nakkheeran, who adorned the cabinet of the Pandiya king in Madurai. When we are able to uphold truth and justice at the cost of our beloved form of the Lord, we actually mature to higher realms of spirituality. Our perception gains subtlety and an analysis of the inherent impermanency of life gets initiated. Our witnessing the incessant fight of injustice with justice, falsehood with truth matures us to understand that as long as good exist, bad too exist; hence the fight is definitely incessant.
My intense prayers to Lord Ganesha and my love of the form of Lord Ganesha was at a stage when I perceived multiple subjects. My prayers have never gone futile as it is the result of the sincerity of my prayers and humility that I have matured to perceive duality. From many to just two.
The path is now very clear and clean. As long as good exist, bad too exist. As long as justice exist, injustice too exist. This perception of duality place before us a choice - Good or Bad. The test a little while ago was the choice - Good or my favourite that is proved bad. The moment we choose good here, we transcend feelings to become expansive. The only way to eternal peace is to transcend duality.
Transcending duality signifies the presence of just I and nothing else. This is called solitude. Solitude is Bliss. Adwaitham. The undercurrent to realise solitude is the upkeep of positive thoughts at any point of time. Positive thoughts emanate from humility. Humility is the essence of spirituality.
